Intro Ski touring course

Ski touring in the backcountry requires a set of basic skills. This course give you the perfect introduction to the use of the ski touring equipment, ski touring techniques and skills as well as an introduction to avalanche terrain and assessment. We will use our specially designed classroom by mother nature to learn new techniques and skills. Over two days we give you both theoretical and practical knowledge on how to become an more independent ski touring partner. Courses are run by IFMGA guides from Northern Alpine Guides.

Our focus on this course:

• Understanding your ski touring bindings and becoming efficient in their use

• Skinning – Breaking trail and choosing a line, easy angled & steeper turns (Kick turns)

• Introduction to avalanche awareness, route planning, safe travel techniques – choosing terrain

• Get to know the essential avalanche emergency equipment, shovel, probe and transceiver

• Managing ‘transitions’ (being efficient transferring from skinning to skiing modes)

• Effective skiing techniques for different types of snow and terrain

• Introduction to use of maps, guide books and GPS

• Emergency Procedures

This is a Level 1 course of Ski Touring and we recommend our guests to build on this course with our Avalanche Courses. Prices from 3600,- per person.

Is this Course for me?

This course is for those who are quite new to the world of Ski Touring and wants to be more independent. It will suit people who plan to ski-tour on their own in the future, those who want to prepare for more demanding tours, as well as skiers who simply want to try ski-touring for the first time.

Ski ability required: Strong parallel turns on piste and ability to make effective turns off-piste. No ski touring experience necessary. A good level of fitness is desirable as a typical day will involve around 2 or 3 hours of uphill skinning.

This course gives you a basic foundation to explore the ski touring environment for enjoying the mountains without the crowds.

This is a 2,5 day course.
We start each day with a short session inside where we present the theory we will focus on when we are in the field.

Equipment

Upon registration we will send you a complete equipment list. There should not be any surprises on the equipment list. We will be using standard ski touring equipment and we have a good amount of rental gear available.

3600,- NOK pr person (only course fee) or 7200,- NOK pr person included full board accommodation at Lofoten Ski Lodge and a course fee.
